NSDF Moves Dances to GEC

NSDF has moved its dances to the Global Education Center (the "GEC")
housed in historic Richland Hall at 4822 Charlotte Avenue and in the adjacent building at 4820 Charlotte Avenue.  Built in 1894, Richland Hall retains the unique charm of its early days with beautiful exposed brick walls, high ceilings with crown molding, and most importantly HARDWOOD FLOORS.  In addition, the GEC is located about 10 miles closer to central Nashville than our old venue.  We are really excited about our new home.  Please join us for the LBCB Dances, take in the new atmosphere, and tell us what you think. Directions to the GEC can be found here.
In addition, Reuel Reis will begin teaching weekly classes on Tuesday nights at the GEC beginning in June.  More on that can be found below.

Frankie Manning (1914-2009)

From the New York Daily News (4/27):

Frankie Manning, the legendary city dancer who helped create the Lindy Hop in the 1930s, died early this morning of complications from pneumonia. He was a month away from his 95th birthday, for which friends had been planning a party and tribute.

Manning, who was hospitalized 10 days ago, had been suffering physical problems since he took a fall last year.  Until then, he had remained an active dancer and had told friends he was looking forward to dancing at next month's party.

There was no immediate announcement this morning on whether FrankieFest ‘95, scheduled for May 21-25 with dancing competitions, music and instruction, will continue as a memorial tribute.

Manning and his partner Fredi Washington are credited with developing the Lindy Hop's first "aerial" step in a 1935 competition at the Savoy Ballroom. He then became the choreographer for the famous troupe Whitey's Lindy Hoppers.  He toured the world in recent years, teaching and encouraging an international revival of swing dance. He also became one of the great characters of New York's dance world.

At his annual birthday bashes, he was known for insisting on dancing with as many women as his age.  Last year it was 94. An announcement is expected shortly on funeral and memorial services in the city.

Friends say well-wishers can send notes to Frankie Manning, P.O. Box 737648, Elmhurst, N.Y. 11373.

Class Descriptions

Exploring Blues:
This class is and ongoing class meant for the intermediate partner dancer. This will be an ongoing class that explores vernacular Blues movements, connection and movement quality. This class is perfect for anyone who wants to improve at any kind of partner dance. If you are a beginner dancer that would like to attend I would recommend taking a private lesson or two in Blues before the starting date of the class. Please contact me for details.

Beginning Lindy Hop:
Come dive into the world or partner jazz dancing and connection. This class is the bread and butter of the Swing dances and the common language of between them. Some dance experience suggested but not required.

The Lindy Charleston Progression:
One of my favorite classes to teach! Come and Learn about the earliest years of Lindy hop and how the Break Away, Charleston, and Charleston Swing outs became the Swing out we know and love today. Learn to dance to hot jazz along with all the latest trends in Lindy hop dancing. Must have knowledge of basic Charleston, transitions, and be comfortable social dancing Lindy hop basics with solid technique.
